Competition law establishes a complex and evolving regulatory framework that governs business in Canada. Conlin Bedard’s competition law team is led by the Honourable Michael L. Phelan, former Justice of the Federal Court. Mr. Phelan’s expertise in competition law is extensive, having served as a Justice of the Federal Court from 2003 until 2022 and as a judicial member of the Competition Tribunal from 2005 to 2012 and 2016 to 2022. During his tenure on the Competition Tribunal Mr. Phelan presided over numerous leading competition law cases, including cases such as The Commissioner of Competition v Secure Energy Services Inc. (CT-2021-002) and The Commissioner of Competition v Imperial Brush Co. Ltd. et al. (CT-2006-010). He has also dealt with significant case management issues and with dispute resolution and mediation.

Conlin Bedard offers advisory and litigation services in relation to a wide range of competition law issues including: competition litigation; cartels and criminal investigations; compliance and counselling; and advertising and marketing. We also offer services in support of other counsel handling competition law matters on behalf of their clients, including strategic advisory services, litigation strategy and preparation. The firm also is available to assist in the mediation of competition disputes with government and others.
